West of Ithaca and Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, the 9,000 acre Sugar Hill State Forest has 40 miles of trails shared by cross country skiers and snowmobilers. A portion of the Finger Lakes Trail also passes through the forest.

The best trailhead is on CR23 halfway between Watkins Glen and Tyrone near a rustic sign. If you can find it, theres also parking at the Sugar Hill Fire Tower.

Overall, Sugar Hill State Forest is the 42nd most popular cross country ski area of all 61 Nordic ski destinations in New York. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Sugar Hill State Forest including Hammond Hill State Forest, Shindagin Hollow State Forest, Danby State Forest and Interloken Trail.
