Southeast of Tawas, the Highbanks Trail is a 7 mile ungroomed cross country ski route with views of the Au Sable River Valley. There are two trailheads: Iargo Springs and Sid Town Village.

To reach the Sid Town trailhead from the intersection of US 23 and River Rd. in Oscoda, go west on River Rd. for just over 14 miles. Take a right on Cooke Dam Rd. and go 1.6 miles to Sid Town Village, park on the left.

Overall, Highbanks Trail is the 32nd most popular cross country ski area of all 46 Nordic ski destinations in Michigan. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Highbanks Trail including Huron-Manistee National Forest, Corsair Ski Trails, Big M Cross Country Ski Trail, Hungerford Trail, North Country Trail - Marilla To Dilling and Mackenzie Cross Country Ski Trail.
