Northeast of Virginia and Biwabik in the Superior National Forest, the 5.2 mile Laurentian Trail is a rolling backcountry trail located near the Silver Trail in the Giants Ridge Recreation Area. The route flows through rich aspen and pine forests.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Biwabik, head east on SR135 for 1.5 miles. Proceed north on CR138 for three miles into the GRRA on the left.

Overall, Laurentian Trail is the 18th most popular cross country ski area of all 38 Nordic ski destinations in Minnesota. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Laurentian Trail including Bear Island - Lake Trail, Birch Lake Trail, Jasper Hills XC Ski Trail, North Arm Trails, Giants Ridge Resort and Silver Trail.
