Montpelier / Wells River Trail Cross Country Skiing

The 19th most popular XC Ski in Vermont.

East of Montpelier, the 26,000 acre Groton State Forest has a vast network of cross country skiing trails through rolling dense second growth forest. This is prime deer, black bear and moose habitat.

The Montpelier / Wells River Trail is a 14.5 mile multi-use trail along an old railroad grade.

To reach the Ricker Pond trailhead from the intersection of I-91 and US 302 west of Wells River, go west on US 302 for about 9 miles. Turn right on SR 232 and travel 2.5 miles to parking at Ricker Pond State Park.

Overall, Montpelier / Wells River Trail is the 19th most popular cross country ski area of all 29 Nordic ski destinations in Vermont.
