North of Duluth and Virginia in the Superior National Forest, the Big Aspen Trail is a 20 mile multi-purpose route. The looping trail system follows old logging roads and railroad grades while passing through pine and hardwood forests.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Virginia, head north on SR53 for 8 miles. Turn right on CR131 for 1 mile. Turn left on CR68 for 0.3 miles. Continue straight on CR405 for 2 miles to parking lot.

Overall, Big Aspen Trail is the 16th most popular cross country ski area of all 39 Nordic ski destinations in Minnesota. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Big Aspen Trail including Bear Island - Lake Trail, Birch Lake Trail, Jasper Hills XC Ski Trail, North Arm Trails, Giants Ridge Resort and Laurentian TrailSilver Trail.
