North of Ely in the Superior National Forest, the North Junction trail system consists of a series of loops through hilly uplands and past swamps and ponds.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Ely, head north on the Echo Trail (CR116) for 11 miles. The trailhead is near the intersection with North Arm Road (CR644).

Overall, North Junction Trails is the 31st most popular cross country ski area of all 39 Nordic ski destinations in Minnesota. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby North Junction Trails including Bear Island - Lake Trail, Birch Lake Trail, Jasper Hills XC Ski Trail, North Arm Trails, Giants Ridge Resort and Laurentian TrailSilver Trail.
