Near Empire, the Butler Gulch Trail is a short, but popular, winter trail. The moderate to steep trail is 1.5 miles one way through trees along a narrow road and leads to an open bowl ideal for backcountry skiing.

Directions: Off of Hwy 40 just south of Berthoud Pass, take the Henderson Mine Rd. Just before reaching the mines entrance gate, bear to the right where there is a parking area. Start traveling on the Jones Pass Road. After about a quarter miles, Butler Gulch Trail hoots off to your left.

Overall, Butler Gulch Trail is the 50th most popular cross country ski area of all 58 Nordic ski destinations in Colorado. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Butler Gulch Trail including Devils Thumb, Latigo Ranch, Eldora Mountain Resort, Frisco Nordic Center, Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center and KeystoneBreckenridge Nordic.
