South of St. Marys, the Moshannon State Forest has an extensive network of scenic nordic ski trails.
To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead near the Forest HQ from the intersection of US 322 and US 220 in State College, go north on US 220 for 12.5 miles. Go west on I-80 for 27 miles. Go north on SR 1011 for 13 miles to Karthaus. Continue north on 1011 for 10 more miles. Veer left on SR 2004 (Quehanna Hwy) and go 7 miles to the Forest Headquarters.
Overall, Moshannon State Forest is the 34th most popular cross country ski area of all 35 Nordic ski destinations in Pennsylvania.
