South of John Day in the Malheur National Forest, the Shoeshoe Trail (#220) is an 11 mile route open to cross-country skiing.

To reach the trailhead from John Day, head south on SR395 for 14 miles. At Izee Road (CR53), turn left to the trailhead.

Overall, Shoeshoe Trail is the 20th most popular cross country ski area of all 24 Nordic ski destinations in Oregon. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Shoeshoe Trail including Starr Trail, Eagle Trail, Tenderfoot Trail and Flagtail Trail.
