South of John Day in the Malheur National Forest, the Starr Trail is a 4.9 mile route open to cross-country skiing.

To reach the trailhead from John Day, head south on SR395 for 12 miles. The trailhead is located across from Starr Ridge Campground.

Overall, Starr Trail is the 22nd most popular cross country ski area of all 24 Nordic ski destinations in Oregon. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Starr Trail including Flagtail Trail, Shoeshoe Trail, Eagle Trail and Tenderfoot Trail.
