South of John Day in the Malheur National Forest, the Flagtail Trail (#221) is a 15 mile route open to cross-country skiing. It connects with numerous side trails ranging from 2.1 to 3 miles long.

To reach the trailhead from John Day, head south on SR395 for 13 miles to Izee Road. Turn right for 9 miles. Turn right on FS645 to the trailhead.

Overall, Flagtail Trail is the 12th most popular cross country ski area of all 23 Nordic ski destinations in Oregon. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Flagtail Trail including Shoeshoe Trail, Eagle Trail, Tenderfoot Trail and Starr Trail.
