Northwest of Gunnison and west of Crested Butte, the Lily Lake Nordic Trail System is a 10km trail network for cross country skiing. During the month of November, the Crested Butte Nordic Center grooms the trail network for classical and skate skiing under a special use permit from the Gunnison National Forest.
The 1km loop adjacent to the parking area is good for beginners and has a slight roll. The main trail network is up on the bluff south of the parking area. It takes about 20 minutes to ascent the 650 feet of vertical up the bluff. The ascent and descent are definitely for moderate to advanced nordic skiers.
To reach the Lily Lake Nordic Trail System trailhead from Crested Butte, head west on Whiterock Avenue, which turns into Kebler Pass Road, for 6 miles. There is plenty of roadside parking.
Overall, Lily Lake Nordic Trail System is the 48th most popular cross country ski area of all 51 Nordic ski destinations in Colorado. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Lily Lake Nordic Trail System including Crested Butte Nordic Center, Elk Mountain Grand Traverse, Slate River / Oh-Be-Joyful, Brush Creek, Cement Creek and Kebler Pass System.
