Southwest of Salzburg, the Kitzbuhl (pop. 7800) is known as one of the best alpine ski areas in Europe, but also has an extensive nordic trail system.
In Kitzbuehel there are 4 trails for a total of 52.5 km (moderate to challenging). In the district encompassing Kitzbuehel, Kirchberg, Aschau, Reith, St. Johann, Jochberg, Pass Thurn and Mittersill there are ca. 120 km of groomed trails, which may be reached by ski bus.
Kitzbuehel, Reith and Aurach offer over 40 km of regularly groomed and marked trails and invite you to experience these wonderfully unique surroundings. The 14 km long trail, which begins in Maurachfeld by the Hahnenkamm Gondola, includes challenging terrain in the direction of Malern and then further to Aurach. From the x-country arena by the Hotel Bruggerhof, the sunny trails continue on to Kirchberg, Reith and around the Schwarzsee. Enjoy the luxury of heated change rooms, with ski rentals and service at both starting points, beginning at 9:00am. We would also recommend the High Marsh Trail at Pass Turn because of its consistently good snow. Start: Mountain Gasthof Breitmoos. Here we are able to offer something very special: cross-country skiing at night - Hochmoor and Schwarzsee - the trails are illuminated until 9:00 pm.
The town is old, lovely and romantic, but still has an active nightlife and can get crowded at times. Its just around the Horn from the nordic trail system of St. Johann in Tirol, as well.
To reach this area from Salzburg, follow Route 215 west through Germany. Near Lofer, head west on Route 704 and then head southwest on Route 312. Near St. Johann, head south on Route 161 into Kitzbuhel.
Overall, Kitzbuhel is the 2nd most popular cross country ski area of all 16 Nordic ski destinations in Austria.
