Southeast of Geneva in the northern Swiss Alps on the French border, the small French valley of Les Gets in the Haute Savoie valley has plenty of serious cross country skiing. Trails run through forested mountains.
To reach this area from Geneva, head southeast on Route A40 to Cluses. Follow Route D902 northeast into Les Gets.
Note: the best way to get around Switzerland in the winter is via train. A good value, if it still exists, is the Swiss Card which can be bought for First or Second Class. It must be purchased before arrival 800-438-7245 or www.raileurope.com.
Overall, Les Gets is the 2nd most popular cross country ski area of all 19 Nordic ski destinations in France.
