Southwest of Bern, the Gstaad Super Ski Region has 76 miles of cross-country ski trails. Gstaad (pop. 2000) is one of the worlds greatest alpine ski resorts.

To reach this area from Bern, head south on Route A6 to Faulensee. Follow Route 11 east to Gstaad.

Note: the best way to get around Switzerland in the winter is via train. A good value, if it still exists, is the Swiss Card which can be bought for First or Second Class. It must be purchased before arrival 800-438-7245 or www.raileurope.com.

Overall, Gstaad is the 3rd most popular cross country ski area of all 22 Nordic ski destinations in Switzerland.
