North of Napa Valley, the 3,500 acre Boggs Mountain State Forest has a lengthy network of ungroomed trails and fireroads through madrona, redwood and whispering pine. There are 22 miles of unimproved roads and more than 14 miles of non-motorized use trails that cover a variety of terrain including meadows, ridge tops, and dense forests.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Calistoga, follow SR29 northeast for 9.5 miles into Middletown. Turn left heading northwest on SR175 for 9.5 miles through Cobb. Turn right onto Forestry Drive (FS500) towards the forest fire station and park near the helipad. Trail maps are usually available on a kiosk.

Overall, Boggs Mountain State Forest is the 25th most popular cross country ski area of all 38 Nordic ski destinations in California.
