North of Mammoth Lakes, the National Forest maintains a 10km groomed cross country ski trail network starting at Deadman Summit and looping near Obsidian Dome. Grooming is intermittent.

The cross country skiing trailhead is located off US395, south of the June Lake turn-off just north of Deadman Summit.

Overall, Deadman Summit / Obsidian Dome is the 9th most popular cross country ski area of all 38 Nordic ski destinations in California. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Deadman Summit / Obsidian Dome including Tamarack Lodge Resort, Rock Creek Lodge, Knolls Trail, Red Cone Trail, Sierra Meadows and June Lake JunctionShadyrest Trail System.
