North of Mammoth Lakes, the ungroomed 7km Knolls Trail winds through Lodgepole and Jeffery Pine forests while crossing the Mammoth Knolls. It is marked by #6 on the trail map.

The cross country ski trailhead is off the Mammoth Lakes Scenic Loop Road about 1.5 miles north of SR203.

Overall, Knolls Trail is the 17th most popular cross country ski area of all 38 Nordic ski destinations in California. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Knolls Trail including Deadman Summit / Obsidian Dome, Red Cone Trail, Shadyrest Trail System, Sierra Meadows, June Lake Junction, Tamarack Lodge Resort and Rock Creek Lodge.
