Southwest of South Lake Tahoe at Carson Pass, the Kirkwood Cross Country Center has 80 km of marked and signed cross country ski trails. There are three interconnected systems spread over 4,200 acres located above 8,000 feet. The tracks are through classic high Sierra with big pine forest below massive exposed granite peaks. All the trails are groomed daily with double tracks and skating lanes. About 60% of the terrain is intermediate and 20% is advanced.
To reach Kirkwood from South Lake Tahoe, head south on SR89. Then turn west onto SR88 for about 15 minutes. Its about a 35 minute drive.
Lodging options are VERY limited, VERY expensive and not know for high quality. Try the quaint Sorensens Resort, which is about 15 minutes east and has 100km of backcountry trails, or stay in South Tahoe, which is about 30 minutes away.
Overall, Kirkwood Cross Country Center is the 3rd most popular cross country ski area of all 36 Nordic ski destinations in California. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Kirkwood Cross Country Center including Royal Gorge XC, Bear Valley Cross Country, Northstar Cross Country Center, Nordic Center At Squaw Valley, Sugar Pine Point State Park and Cabin Creek Cross Country Ski Area.
