Southwest of South Lake Tahoe at Carson Pass, Kirkwood has 80 km of marked and signed cross country ski trails in three interconnected systems over 4,200 acres above 8,000. The tracks are through classic high Sierra with big pine forest below massive exposed granite peaks. All the trails are groomed daily with double tracks and skating lanes. About 60% of the terrain is intermediate and 20% is advanced.
To reach Kirkwood from South Lake Tahoe, head south on SR89. Then turn west onto SR88 for about 15 minutes. Its about a 35 minute drive.
Lodging options are VERY limited, VERY expensive and not know for high quality. Try the quaint Sorensens Resort, which is about 15 minutes east and has 100km of backcountry trails, or stay in South Tahoe, which is about 30 minutes away.
Overall, Kirkwood is the 4th most popular cross country ski area of all 38 Nordic ski destinations in California.
