The Gore Pass Loop is an excellent cross-country skiing route.
From Yampa, take Highway 131 south to Toponas and the intersection with Highway 134. Continue east on Highway to the top of Gore Pass, approximately 16 miles. Park on the left side of the highway across from Gore Pass campground.
OPTION 1: Take Forest Road 185 on the north side of Gore Pass. Head north approximately 1.5 miles to the fork in the road (to a signed intersection). Stay right at the fork and follow Road 185 for about 4 miles. This intersects gravel road #100; turn left; head 2.5 miles. Turn left on Road 250 (south) heading down along Farnham Creek. In about 7.5 miles, this road will intersect several others. Stay left and continue on FDR 250 for 3.2 miles until it almost intersects with the highway. Turn left and head on Road 241 for about 4.5 miles. This joins Road 185; head south to Gore Pass to complete the loop.
OPTION 2: Follow the description for Gore Pass until it intersects with FDR # 100 . Continue on Road # 100 for approximately a until it intersects with Road 101 to the right. This road takes you approximately 4 miles to Red Dirt Reservoir. Turn around a reservoir and head back the way you came to Gore Pass. This alternative route is approximately 24 miles.
OPTION 3: GORE CREEK LOOP ( 18 MILES) From Gore Pass take Road 185 north for about 1.5 miles. At the fork in the road, stay left on Road 243. In a half mile you will come to another fork in the road. Stay right and continue west on the trail. In another 1/2 mile the road makes a switchback and begins to head northeast. There are several roads branching off to the left. These are logging roads: most dead-end and gated. Always stay to the right and you will follow Road #234. This trail is marked with orange diamonds as a winter snowmobile route. In about miles you will begin to head west. Follow for about 3.5 miles to the intersection with FDR #250. This will take you south to, Hwy 134. About 100 yards from the highway, take a sharp left onto Road #241. Follow #241 for about 4.5 miles until it connects with Road # 185. Turn right and continue on #185 back to Gore Pass. About 27.5 mi.
