Near Steamboat Springs, one of the areas largest and most popular backcountry ski areas is Rabbit Ears Pass. At the Pass are routes ranging from 2 to 7 miles with levels from moderate to most difficult. To reach the trailhead from Steamboat, follow US40 east for 18 miles to the Pass.
From the parking area, ski northwest for roughly 1 mile across an open meadow. Then ski through the forest heading north to the stone monument on Old Rabbit Ears Pass Road. Continue north into the open bowls or northeast up to Rabbit Ears Peak. The altitude ranges from 9,400 feet to 10,300.
Other local backcountry ski areas include Pearl Lake State Park and Stagecoach State Recreation Area.
Overall, Rabbit Ears Pass is the 3rd most popular cross country ski area of all 52 Nordic ski destinations in Colorado. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Rabbit Ears Pass including Buffalo Pass / Soda Mountain, Gore Pass Loop, Vista Verde Ranch, Steamboat Ski Touring Center, Dunckley Pass Ski Trails and Lake Catamount Touring Center.
