North of Leadville at the summit of Tennesse Pass (10,600), the Mitchell Loops are a network of backcountry ski trails that provide great woods skiing up to a vista over Mt. Holy Cross, Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert at 11,400 feet along the Continental Divide. The trailhead is located across US24 from Cooper Ski Area. At the Cooper Nordic Center, there are many groomed trails, as well. Try a rewarding climb to the Tennessee Pass cookhouse (yurt) for lunch, and then descend 14 miles down the CT to Camp Hale. Also, the Piney Creek Nordic Center has 25 km of groomed trails and suppors telemark skiing.

Overall, Tennessee Pass Mitchell Loop is the 21st most popular cross country ski area of all 58 Nordic ski destinations in Colorado. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Tennessee Pass Mitchell Loop including Shrine Pass Trail, Tigiwon Trail, Beaver Creek, New York Mountain / Yeoman Park, Vail Golden Peak Nordic and Vail Nordic Center.
