East of Moscow and Bovil in the Clearwater National Forest, the Elk River area has plenty of nordic ski opportunities. There are over 60km of groomed trails spread between three areas: south of town (13km), Shattuck Butte (30km) north of town near old growth cedar, and Elk Butte (18km) northeast of town. Check with the Huckleberry Heaven Lodge for trail conditions.

For backcountry ski touring, try the Upper Basin Interpretive Trail #747 (4.9 mile one-way) which climbs through the saddle between the West Fork of the Elk Creek and main Elk Creek. This scenic route is located 8 miles north of town on FS382.

The town of Elk River is on SR8 about 54 miles east of Moscow.

Overall, Elk River Nordic Trails is the 20th most popular cross country ski area of all 43 Nordic ski destinations in Idaho. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Elk River Nordic Trails including Palouse Divide and Sand Mountain.
