West of Wisdom Montana in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, the region near Chief Joseph Pass has over 70 km of track and backcountry ski trails. The Chief Joseph Cross-Country Ski Trails located 28 miles west of Wisdom on SR43 has 24 km of loops along the Continental Divide that are groomed weekly. Across the street, old Anderson Mountain Road is a section of the Continental Divide Trail that is popular with backcountry skiers.

The Cabinet Creek Trail located 26 miles west of Wisdom on SR43 is a 10 km backcountry trail leading up to bisect the Anderson Mountain Road. The Richardson Creek trail shares the parking area with Cabinent Creek and also leads up to Anderson Mountain Road (6 km).

The NFS May Creek Campground area located 16 miles west of Wisdom has 24 km of trails along May Creek and the ridge above that lead up towards Cabinet Creek.

Overall, Chief Joseph Pass is the 10th most popular cross country ski area of all 43 Nordic ski destinations in Idaho. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Chief Joseph Pass including Salmon-Challis National Forest and Williams Creek Summit Trails.
