Located northwest of Portland, the Bethel area on the eastern edge of the WMNF has several large nordic ski systems which receive plenty of snow.
The Bethel Inn Ski Touring Center has 38 km of groomed trails that interconnect with the ungroomed trails on the adjacent WMNF. Similarly, the Telemark Inn has 20 km of groomed trails (open to guests and a very limited number of non-guests) that interconnect with extensive backcountry trails in the WMNF. To reach the trailhead from the intersection of US 2 and SR 35 in north Bethel, go east on SR 35 for 300 feet. Turn right on Church St. and go .5 mile to the Common in Bethel. Look for the Nordic Center.
Located adjacent to the Sunday River Ski Area, the Sunday River In Nordic Ski Center has 40 km of meticulously groomed ski trails. Winding through the Androscoggin Valley, Carters X-C ski Center grooms 65 km of their 100 km of trails through scenic forest offering views of the distant Mount Washington range. Also, the Troll Valley Cross-Country Ski Center 35 miles west of Bethel in Farmington has 40 km of groomed trails and an extensive ungroomed trail system (207-778-3656).
To reach the Bethel area from Portland, follow US495 north to Exit 11 in Gray. Follow SR26 west into Bethel.
Overall, Bethel Inn is the 7th most popular cross country ski area of all 13 Nordic ski destinations in Maine.
