East of Greenfield near Erving, the 4,500 acre Erving State Forest has miles of backcountry ski tracks. To reach the trailhead from Erving, head north on SR2. Follow the signs to the Laurel Lake Campground parking. From the campground, ski up one of the two old forest roads leading south towards the better terrain. The favored trails in the area include Cut Off, Mountain Road and Pinacle Road. Returning to the parking lot on the Paved Quarry Road or High Street will save you a lot of uphill sweat.

Overall, Erving State Forest is the 4th most popular cross country ski area of all 21 Nordic ski destinations in Massachusetts.
