West of Greenfield and Shelburne Falls, the 7,800 acre Kenneth Dubuque Memorial State Forest has plenty of backcountry trails. Near West Hawley, the Stump Sprouts XC Center has 18 km of groomed track.

To reach the cross country skiing at Stump Sprouts Lodge from Boston, Eastern Massachusetts: Take Route 2 West to Charlemont, MA. Then, take Route 8A South 6 miles to West Hill Road. Take a right onto that road and continue for one mile.

To reach the cross country skiing at Stump Sprouts Lodge from Hartford, Most of Connecticut: Take I-91 to Route 2 in Greenfield, MA (Exit 26). Then take Route 2 west to Charlemont, MA. Next, take Route 8A south 6 miles to West Hill Road. Take a right onto that road and continue for one mile.

Overall, Stump Sprouts Lodge is the 7th most popular cross country ski area of all 21 Nordic ski destinations in Massachusetts.
