The 120,000 acre HMNF located around Cadillac has more that 600 miles of backcountry dirt roads and trails. The nearby Hoist Lakes Trails is a 20 mile marked trail system linking several lakes and steep terrain of particular interest to expert backcountry skiers and telemarkers.

Other routes include: Cross-County Cycle Trail and Cedar Creek Trail, Horseshoe Lake Trail, Udell Hills Trail. Also, dont forget that the North Country Trail passes through the forest!

Overall, Huron-Manistee National Forest is the 9th most popular cross country ski area of all 47 Nordic ski destinations in Michigan. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Huron-Manistee National Forest including Corsair Ski Trails, Big M Cross Country Ski Trail, Hungerford Trail, North Country Trail - Marilla To Dilling, Highbanks Trail and Mackenzie Cross Country Ski TrailCadillac Pathway.
