Lutsen Mountains Cross Country Skiing

The Lutsen Mountain area has a 12 mile backcountry ski loop with the most vertical (1300) of any comparable length trail in the state. The route passes through northern boreal forests of maple, aspen, birch, balsam fir and towering pines. There are great views of Lake Superior from the Moose Mountain summit. Don t miss the Poplar Falls and keep an eye out for moose and wolves.

To reach the trailhead from Tofte, head north on US61. Proceed north on CR36 to the Lutsen Mountain gondola lift station and trailhead.

To reach the trailhead from the south, head north on US35 to Duluth. In the Duluth freeway system, take the last possible exit labeled HWY 61 - North Shore Drive. Stay on HWY 61 North for 90 miles. Just after the 90 mile-marker, you will see a large, lighted sign for Lutsen Mountains. Turn left on Ski Hill Road (County Rd 5). Lutsen Mountains is located 1.5 miles off Hwy 61 on Ski Hill Road.
