South of Newport in the Northeast Kingdom, the Craftsbury Nordic Ski Center has 170 km of cross country skiing trails with 85 km groomed for skate and in-line skiing. The tracks traverse meadows and woods passing scenic pastures and lakes.
To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from the intersection of SR 14 and SR 15 north of Hardwick, go north on SR 14 for about 7 miles. Next, take a right turn at the "Craftsbury Outdoor Center 6 miles" sign (South Craftsbury Road). Pass through Craftsbury Village, go up a hill, through the village of Craftsbury Common (a collection of white houses at the top of the hill). Sterling College is on your left in the common, the Post Office and Craftsbury Academy are on your right. Continue out of town approximately 3/4 mile past the Common, and look for a yellow curve sign. As the sign indicates, the pavement curves to the left, you want to bear right off the pavement and follow the "Craftsbury Outdoor Center" signs (staying on Mill Village Road). Continue winding on the dirt road for just under 1.25 miles and turn right onto Lost Nation Road. The Outdoor Centers office is located approximately 0.6 miles on the left. You will see a large Craftsbury Outdoor Center sign. The office is in the white farmhouse.
Plus, theres 65 km of groomed trails around Highland Lodge in Greensboro.
Overall, Craftsbury Outdoor Center is the 4th most popular cross country ski area of all 23 Nordic ski destinations in Vermont. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Craftsbury Outdoor Center including Burke Cross Country Ski and Jay Peak Nordic.
