South of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, the ungroomed 5 mile Sheepeater Trail has views of the Gardner River Canyon. The cross country ski trailhead is located off the Mammoth-Norris Snow Vehicle Road at Indian Creek Hut. Ski north on the road to the Sheepeater Cliffs Picnic Area and follow the trail along the east side of Swan Lake Flats through forest and meadow. After passing the Bunsen Peak Trail, the route reaches the Mammoth-Norris road.

To reach the Indian Creek Hut Trailhead from the intersection of Grand Loop Rd. and US 89 in Mammoth Hot Springs, go southwest on Grand Loop Rd. for 7.5 miles. Parking is on the right side of the road at Indian Creek Hut.

Overall, Sheepeater Trail is the 18th most popular cross country ski area of all 26 Nordic ski destinations in Wyoming. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Sheepeater Trail including Snow Pass Trail, Bighorn Loop and Bunsen Peak Trail.
