Southeast of Grantsville and west of Frostburg, the 700 acre Mt. Aetna Tract of the Savage River State Forest has 11 miles of trails and doubletracks open to cross country skiing. A great starting point is the Savage River Lodge.
Near Oakland in Garrett County, the 8,000 acre Potomac-Garrett State Forest has miles of trails and logging roads through dense oak, cherry and maple forests. The 9 mile Garrett Trail System starts in Herrington Manor State Park.
