Northeast of Missoula, the Garnet Byway provides a 12 mile snowmobile journey through the Garnet Mountain Range. The Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail follows existing roads which are closed in the winter. The Byway, as well as 43 miles of adjacent trails, are marked and groomed for snowmobilies from January 1 through April 30. Along the route, enjoy outstanding views from overlooks and visit a preserved ghost town.

To reach the trailhead from SR200, turn south between mile markers 22 and 23, about 30 miles east of Missoula. Plowed parking lots are provided at the trailhead close to Route 200.

Overall, Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail is the 10th most popular snowmobile trail of all 33 snowmobiling rides in Montana. Several of the better snowmobile trails are nearby Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail including Seeley Lake, Lolo Pass, Haugan-Lookout Pass and Blue Mountain Recreation Area.
