Southwest of Traverse City, the Benzie County area has 135 miles of groomed, marked snowmobile trails. The Benzie area has two groomed trail systems. The Platte River Trail can be picked up just east of Honor. Places that can be reached on the Platte River Trail are Empire and Maple City, both in Leelanau County. To the south, the trail crosses U.S. 31 just east of Thompsonville Rd. The Betsie River Trail begins in Beulah. Parts of the trail are the old railroad bed that is now Betsie Valley Trail. The Betsie River Snowmobile Trail goes to Thompsonville. It also contains a sizeable loop that connects with Platte River Trail and will take you into Manistee County south of Thompsonville where you can reach Kaleva, Bear Lake or eventually Manistee.
To reach the snowmobiling trailhead for Benzie County at the Platte River Association Hall from the intersection of SR 72 and US 31 in Traverse City, go southwest on US 31 for 24 miles to the trailhead. It will be before the town of Honor on the right hand side of the road.
There is a trailhead in Thompsonville. It is north of SR115 off CR669 in the village.
The Beulah Trailhead is located at the Visitor Center in downtown Beulah.
Note: A trail permit is required to ride on these trails.
