Southwest of Ely, the Taconite State Trail is a 159 mile snowmobile route from Coleraine to Ely.

To reach the Grand Rapids snowmobiling trailhead for the Taconite State Trail from the intersection of SR 38 and 8th Street in Grand Rapids, go east on 8th Street for almost .5 mile. Turn left (north) on 3rd Avenue NE and go over .5 mile to parking area.

Overall, Taconite State Trail is the 4th most popular snowmobile trail of all 38 snowmobiling rides in Minnesota. Several of the better snowmobile trails are nearby Taconite State Trail including Arrowhead State Trail, Voyageurs National Park and Ely.
