East of Farmington, the 9,000 acre Shimek State Forest has 14 miles of snowmobile trails through dense pine forests in the Keosauqua Unit.

The snowmobile trailhead is near the Shimek State Forest headquarters is located about 1 mile northeast of Farmington on County Road J56.

Overall, Shimek State Forest is the 10th most popular snowmobile trail of all 25 snowmobiling rides in Iowa.
