Northeast of Manchester near Alton, there is an extensive network of groomed snowmobile trails. These trails are maintained by the Mount Major Snowmobile Club.

To reach the snowmobiling trailhead from Alton Snowmobile Trails from southern New Hampshire, follow signs to Route 93 North. Then, follow Route 93 North to SR140 Eastbound. Next, continue on SR140 eastbound to Alton. SR140 ends in the center of Alton at SR11.

While snowmobiling Alton, all snowmobiles must have a New Hampshire OHRV registration decal. To obtain a NH OHRV registration decal, you will need to show proof of member ship in a New Hampshire snowmobile club, such as the Mount Major Snowmobile Club.

Overall, Alton is the 10th most popular snowmobile trail of all 31 snowmobiling rides in New Hampshire. Several of the better snowmobile trails are nearby Alton including Brookline and Strafford .
