East of Bend and south of Canyon City in the Malheur National Forest, the Idylwild Sno Park provides access to the southern half of the John Day snowmobile trail system. The sno park is on US395 south of Seneca.

Overall, John Day South is the 28th most popular snowmobile trail of all 30 snowmobiling rides in Oregon. Several of the better snowmobile trails are nearby John Day South including Mt. Bachelor, Hoodoo, Paulina Lake, Crescent Lake, Three Creek Sno Park and Santiam Pass / Corbett Sno-Park.
