Northeast of Helena, the Magpie-Sunshine area has 45 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. The routes provide vistas of the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness. The snowmobile routes run from Magpie Recreation Area on the shores of Canyon Ferry Lake east of Helena up to the northeast toward Sunshine Basin. The views into Gates of the Mountains Wilderness are to the north of the trail system.

Overall, Magpie-Sunshine is the 32nd most popular snowmobile trail of all 33 snowmobiling rides in Montana. Several of the better snowmobile trails are nearby Magpie-Sunshine including Lincoln, Marysville / Austin System Snowmobile Trail, Rimini-Elliston-Basin Snowmobile Loop and Minnehaha / Beaver Creek.
