North of Augusta, the Forks Area has a 130 mile snowmobile trail system groomed daily. The snowmobiling routes ITS 87 along Moxie Lake and ITS 86 along Dead River are two most scenic snowmobile rides in the Forks Area.

For snowmobiling near Forks and the rest of state, all riders, resident and non-resident alike, must register their snowmobiles in Maine to ride in Maine. Most of the registration money goes to the Snowmobile Trail Fund of the Department of Conservation. Registration information is available at (207) 287-2043. After registration, make sure to read the Maine Snowmobile Law Book. Note: it is illegal to ride ATVs on designated snowmobile trails.
