Southeast of Watertown and northeast of Syracuse, the popular Old Forge area has over 500 miles of snowmobiling in the Adirondack Mountains. It is considered the snowmobile capital of New York and interconnects with Central and Update New York snowmobile trail systems. While the Old Forge snowmobile trails officially open in early December, the best snowmobiling is usually in January and February. Note: Since these are groomed trail systems, a local paid trail permit is required to ride this system. The Town of Webb/Inlet Trail Permit is the required permit.
North of Saratoga Springs, the area between Lake George and Lake Luzerne has miles of groomed snowmobile trails. The Lake George snowmobile trails are groomed by the South Warren Snowmobile Club.
South of Buffalo and Ellicottville near Salamanca in Cattaraugus County, the 65,000 acre Allegheny State Park has 61 miles of groomed snowmobiling rolling around the surrounding hills through hardwood forests on closed forest roads and trails. When snowmobiling the Allegany State Park, all snowmobiles must have a New York State snowmobile registration unless you are riding on your own private property.
Southeast of Buffalo and northeast of Portageville in Wyoming County, the Letchworth State Park has 70 miles of trails with various uses including snowmobile riding. The snowmobiling trails in Letchworth State Park pass through lush forest along the Genessee River gorge and pass three major waterfalls.
Northeast of Buffalo, the Niagara County area has diverse snowmobiling routes linking the towns of Niagara, Wheatfield, Sanborn, Pekin, Lewiston, Cambria, and Ransomville. Most of the snowmobile trails are on private property so make sure to be careful and respectful. The Niagara County snowmobile trails are groomed by the Shawnee Sno-Chiefs Snowmobile Club.
South of Walton in the western Catskills, the 7,200 acre Bear Spring Mountain Wildlife Management Area has 24 miles of marked snowmobiling trails rolling through forest and meadows. The scenic routes pass lakes and waterfalls.
Near Lake Placid, there is an extensive trail system maintained by the Lake Placid Snowmobile Club. The snowmobile trails fork in Lake Placid with a route heading southeast towards Keene and one heading northeast to Wilmington.
East of Jamestown and Randoulph, Cattaraugus County has an extensive snowmobile trail network maintained by the Franklinville Snowmobile Club. The Cattaraugus County Snowmobile Trails have over 60 miles of trails connecting 2 villages and 7 towns.
Near Mayville, the Chautauqua Rails To Trails system has several miles of snowmobile trails along an old railroad grade through scenic mixed forest and past meadows. In addition, Chautauqua County has over 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.
South of Buffalo, there is an extensive snowmobile trail network stretching across western New York. The snowmobiling trailhead is located south-southwest of Buffalo.
